What is GME? GME or Graduate Marine Engineering is a 1-year diploma training course, undertaken by candidates who wish to work in the merchant navy sector. The colleges that offer this program are monitored by the Directorate General of Shipping who decide on the admission criteria and eligibility criteria. The course is meant for eligible candidates who have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or in naval architecture. Graduates from this course go on to become marine engineers, marine surveyors etc. Note: Students who wish to pursue their education in Management field or get a career boost, can check MBA course. Graduates from this program are eligible to work as junior engineers and complete at least 6 months training service in merchant navy vessels. Upon completion of the training period, one has to sit for the Class IV Part ‘B’ examination. Successfully passing the examination will award the candidates with a Certificate of Competency by the Mercantile Marine Department of the Government of India. Admission to GME courses is mostly on the basis of entrance exams where candidates are tested on their aptitude, IQ, reasoning among other topics. A personal interview round is also held. Some colleges admit students on merit and consider the bachelor’s level aggregate score for admission. The average course fees range from INR 24,000 to INR 2,40,000 annually in the top colleges in India. Placements and jobs are plentiful for graduates from the GME course. Jobs are found in both on-shore and off-shore organisations. One can also choose to go the education route and work as professors and teachers in marine engineering. Statistics show that there is a predicted growth rate of 9% until 2024 in this field. The average GME placement package of fresh graduates can be anywhere from INR 1 lakh to INR 11 lakh.
