1Complaint filed by BJP’s youth wing leader
A case under section 153 (A) of the IPC (promoting enmity between different groups on the ground religion, etc) was registered against him, said Pune police commissioner Amitabh Gupta, PTI reported.
Usmani has been booked on the basis of a complaint lodged by Pradip Gavade, a local leader of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, BJP’s youth wing with Swargate police station.
We have requested the police to also lodge a case against him under section 124-A, IPC as he clearly stated he didn’t believe in the Indian state, Parliament and judiciary. We also said a case should be lodged against the organisers of Elgar Parishad,” the complainant said.
Amid widespread outrage over his speech at the recent Elgar Parishad conclave, Aligarh university alumnus Sharjeel Usmani was booked by Pune Police on Tuesday for allegedly ‘promoting enmity between different groups’.
Usmani has been at the eye of the storm over his speech at the event with the opposition BJP in Maharashtra demanding action against him for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly Devendra Fadnavis had earlier written to Chief Minister Uddhav over his speech Thackeray demanding action against former Aligarh Muslim University student, alleging he “insulted sentiments of the Hindu community”.
“Sharjeel Usmani in Pune. Regarding the insulting, offensive, serious statement made about the entire Hindu community at the Elgar Conference on January 30, 2021 and the need for immediate and stern action by the state government on it, the Chief Minister Hon. Letter to Uddhav Thackeray @CMOMaharashtra,” Fadnavis wrote on Twitter.
